GENERAL
INFORMATIONS: These instruments to be
discovered and used in history was no doubt.
The
percussion instruments are such a simple
discovery that it doesn't seem logical to think
that they have come into being in one single
country from which they have spread into other
countries.
The
highest ranking of the percussion instruments
seen in Mediterranen countries is the "DAVUL" (buss
drum). It can be seen in almost all the
Mediterranean countries with various dimensions
and shapes.
The
davul has been used for military purposes
throughout the ages due to its ease of use and
the frighting characteristic of its sound
resembling thunder.
The
use of the davul as a means of exultation in
folk dances such as "Halay" goesback a long way.
Halay which is one of the dances that done arm
in arm shoulder to shoulder to the accopaniment
of the davul, around 200 BC (before Christ) is
still played in the same way and to the
accompaniment of the davul in Turkiye. Besides,
Davul is very important instrument for Turkish
Zeybeks music.
Wherever the Turanian tribes went spreading to
various regions throughout history, davul also
spread around with them to many parts of the
world. The Eıropeans called the davul "Turkische
Trommel", "Tambour es Turc", and in the Near
East, it was called "Tabil Tourky".
In
archaic Turkish there exists a word called
"Davul" which meant "wind" or "storm". The same
word also means "storm" in the Turkic dialects
or Jagatai, Kirghiz and Kazan.
Dumbelek, Dumbek, and Tabil are among the
percussion instruments used in Turkey. The Tumba
and Tumbak in Sanskrit, Tumbalos in Greek,
Timballo in Italian, Tabl in arabic are all
names for instrument similar to the Davul. The
similarity among the words is striking. Apart
from the davul which is the most important
percussion instrument, the Deblek (Darbuka), the
Def (with or without cymbals), the Trampete, the
Zil, which are among the common instruments used
in most of the mediterranean countries,
including North Africa, are among the principal
percussion instruments of the Mediterranean.
