GENERAL INFORMATIONS: The wind instruments have developed compared to the string instrumens these are relatively older in all parts of the world. They go as far back as the Antiquity. A bone without marrow, an empty horn or piece of reed gives a sound when it's blown.

Among the wind instruments, the "kaval" appears as the oldest and most common example. I is interesting that this is used as a shepherd instrument in the Mediterranean countries. "Dilli Duduk", which is a type of kaval, is known as a chilren's instruments.

among the historical wind instruments, the "zurna" is also found widely in the Mediterranean countries and even in most parts of the world in various lenths and shapes. This instrument is called "surnay" and also "Nay-i Turki" in Persian, Belonging in this group of instruments, various types such a the "boru", kaval, "double kaval", "tulum" and zurna have developed spreading from one country to the other through various means.

The "Ney", which holds an important place in religious music is made of a king of reed. The ney, which is made up of nine (9) short nodes., takes on different names according to its size and holes.

Ney is still the most important used in Classical Turkish Music and especiallyin Mevlevi Music in Turkiye. The great Turkish philosopher Mevlana Jelaleddin Rumi beginshis famous "Mesnevi" with the following lines:

"Listen to the sound of the ney: Listen how its expressing itself and complaining about home-sickness".

Althought the ney is one of the oldest instruments, the Turks have played an important role in its recent development.

Among the wind instruments, the one producing the most sentimental and the most effective sound is the ney. Made of natural reed, the simple-looking nev offers a rich choice of melodies. It has a touhing, spiritual sounds.

We know very well that the wind instruments, too, developed as they are moved from one country to another by various means, just like other instruments, or that they are transformed into simpler forms such as the duduk sometimes they are even transformed into different types and create a rather complex situation by taking on new names in various languages. Thus while doing a research about instruments. The dates of their names of their types, and spreading around of these often come up as aproblem.
